Our top 3 Augmented Reality apps... that are useful.
When we meet clients, regarding Augmented Reality type work, they usually ask us what our favorite AR apps are.
Many AR apps bank on the first-timer WOW! factor, and nothing much else.
In my opinion, 2 brands have used AR really well:
1. to promote their product as well as
2. made the AR app useful for the user.
They are USPS’s virtual box (so that you can see if your contents will fit into their fixed rate box) and LEGO (to view the completed toy in 3D by pointing the box at a kiosk).
Today I added another brand, Samsung, to the list. Their app allows the user to visualise what the Series 7 TVs could look like on their walls in the living room.

We launched this app during UnConference2009 Singapore and have received great feedback from users. Would like to thank @maynaseric for spreading the word around as well.
We were flattered when Jason Calacanis, CEO of Mahalo.com (if you are on Twitter, do try asking @answers any question), posted a screenshot on his blog.
If you have a webcam, give this Augmented Reality / Mixed Reality app a try. This is slightly different to the usual AR work we have done, as it makes use of facial recognition to detect the positions of your eyes / nose / mouth, and then overlays an image over the video feed. It also repositions and rescales according to your movement. We can also add in animated overlays to make things more interesting.
We have been experimenting with Augmented Reality (via FLARToolkit) for several months. With the recent popularity of Augmented Reality applications such as Tonchidot’s Sekai Camera, GE’s SmartGrid and Mini Cooper’s Print Ad for Augmented Reality , we are now expanding our suite of services to include this.
We are doing some R&D work for Augmented Reality on Symbian OS, Windows Mobile and Iphone, hopefully launching in 2-3 months time.

Demo 1: The new Apple® iPod Shuffle™ - When Apple® released the new iPod Shuffle on 11th March, someone asked me, I wonder how small it really is. So we created a model of the 3rd Generation Shuffle™ in 3D*, animated a “un-tangling the cords” sequence and ported it over to Flash, so that you could easily gauge how tiny this product actually is, without having to go to the stores.
This can be applied to consumer products, think clothes, bags, mobile phones, notebooks, cameras etc.
